Make Your Own Laundry Detergent!

by Christina M Sears on May 31, 2012

The other day I was talking to a friend of mine who is also a fellow Beachbody Coach and she was telling me that she was thinking make her own laundry detergent, So I thought it was a great idea and got on google to figure out what all I needed to buy to make my own Laundry Detergent! There are actually many many ways to make your own laundry detergent so If anyone wants to share how they make there own, Id love to hear about it!! Here is how I made mine!

needed:
1.Fels-Naptha *about one bar shredded , cost about 95 cents
2.Washing soda *two cups , 3 pound box cost about $3.50
3.Borax *two cups, 4 pound box cost about $3.30

All 3 of these ingredients I easily found in the laundry isle at my local Walmart!

I took a liter of water and brought it to a boil and then turned it down to low and added the shredded Fels-naptha bar and stirred it until all the soap had dissolved completely, then I poured the soapy mixture into a large bucket and then stirred in the washing soda and the borax until completely dissolved, then I added two gallons of water and stirred.

This made about two and a half gallons of laundry detergent! The break down of the cost for one batch came to just $2.65. You will only need about a 1/4 of a cup of this detergent as it is very thick and concentrated! I do believe you will be able to wast about 160 loads with one batch! I have done one load of laundry and my clothing smell and feel great! I am going to be making my own laundry detergent from now on because not only will it save me tons of money, it was also VERY easy to make!

Made My Own Laundry Detergent and LOVE it!!

I’m so thrilled to know it works well! I can’t wait to make it! Did you let it cure over night before you used it? The recipes I seen said to but I suppose you could still use it. Not sure as to why it has to cure over night except maybe to just thicken up. Glad you love it!! Now make your own dish soap, bath soap, shampoo, deodorant ect. lol I made my own spray in conditioner and love it!! I will never buy it again! It actually works better!

Check out the video above, the laundry detergent got thick right away and I did use it right away and have been using it ever since and its still works great! Enjoy!

This is so coincidental! One of my sons is into making his own detergent, and talked me into trying it. I’ve purchased the ingredients, but was waiting to use up what I had. Now’s the time to make up a batch and here I see your post! I’m so happy you’re thrilled with it Christina, gives me more confidence in the finished product!

Fascinating! Now will this work in a High Efficiency (HE), washing machine? I have one of them. :)

Thanks Sean, :-) I think that it would work but might be best to check into the 3 products used to make this! Best to be safe then sorry!

Hry girl, great info. Is it liquid then? How are you storing it? Is it low suddsing for our front loaders? I only use prob 2 Tbsp of my All per load. I’d love to make it, just have to be sure those are well and septic safe and low suddsing. :) ))))

Thanks Pamela! It is liquid! Right now I have it in a covered plastic bucket that I bought from Lowes hardware store ….It doesn’t seem to suds up at all in our washer! I look in when its in the middle of the washing cycle and see no suds at all! That also may depend on what type of water we have, if its hard or soft or maybe the borax or washing soda keep the suds down because I made some liquid hand soap the other day and that is VERY sudsy!!
